The Alabama Metal Stud and Drywall Contractor examination is administered by PSI for candidates approved through the Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors. Alabama requires applicants subject to the examination process to complete both the applicable trade examination and the Business and Law examination.
The current content outline assigns 6 questions to Estimating and Plan Reading, 19 questions to Materials and Installation, 4 questions to Taping, 6 questions to Special Applications, and 5 questions to Safety.
Materials and Installation is the largest portion of the examination, accounting for 19 of the 40 scored questions. Candidates should devote significant study time to gypsum systems, metal framing, installation practices, materials, fasteners, wall and ceiling assemblies, and related technical requirements.
Estimating and Plan Reading requires candidates to interpret construction drawings, dimensions, layouts, and project information. Taping focuses on drywall finishing and joint treatment, while Special Applications covers additional systems and situations beyond standard installations. Safety is supported by the OSHA construction standards contained in 29 CFR Part 1926.
The separate Alabama Business and Law examination contains 50 questions, requires a 70% passing score, and allows 120 minutes. Its subjects include licensing, estimating and bidding, liens, financial matters, payroll and taxes, personnel and labor, project management, contracts, business organization, risk management, and safety recordkeeping and environmental requirements.
The Alabama Metal Stud and Drywall Contractor examination is an open book test. PSI permits candidates to use the approved reference materials identified for the examination.
Approved references may be highlighted, underlined, and indexed. Permanent tabs are permitted. Books must otherwise remain unmarked and cannot contain handwritten notes or additional papers, whether loose or attached. Temporary tabs such as removable Post-it notes are not allowed.

Open-book testing still requires preparation. Candidates have 120 minutes for 40 scored questions, so book navigation should support technical knowledge rather than replace it. Knowing which reference contains a subject can reduce unnecessary searching.
For example, OSHA construction safety topics can be located in 29 CFR Part 1926. Commercial building requirements are addressed in the International Building Code, residential requirements are addressed in the International Residential Code, and gypsum construction and metal framing topics are covered extensively in the Gypsum Construction Handbook.
The Alabama Business and Law examination is also open book. NASCLA Contractors Guide to Business, Law and Project Management, Alabama General, 3rd Edition is the identified reference for that examination and is included highlighted and tabbed in this package.
The Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors oversees contractor licensing for classifications regulated under Alabama law. Candidates pursuing Metal Stud and Drywall work must follow the applicable application, qualification, testing, and licensing process.

The Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors regulates general contracting and applicable specialty classifications in the state. Alabama's classification rules include Metal Studs within Building Construction specialty work.
Alabama currently defines a general contractor, for covered work under the general contractor law, as one undertaking qualifying construction work where the cost of the undertaking is $100,000 or more. This threshold includes labor and materials and became effective October 1, 2024. The law also applies a $100,000 threshold to covered subcontractor work under the applicable statutory provisions.
Prime contractor and subcontractor applications have different requirements. Prime contractor applicants must complete the applicable application process through the Board, and the Board requires prime applicants to take the Business and Law examination. Subcontractor applicants use a separate application and must provide the references and information required by the Board.
Applicants must receive eligibility approval through the Board before testing. PSI administers the examinations after the state has determined eligibility.
