Want to earn your Kansas Journeyman Electrician credential without getting tangled in conflicting information? This guide covers Kansas local electrician licensing, the ICC KGH examination, approved electrical references, study topics, practical calculations and Contractor Exam Preps products. It also includes a six-week study plan, FAQs and a related 1ExamPrep video.
Kansas does not currently issue one universal statewide Journeyman Electrician license. Cities and counties administer local certification or licensing programs within a statutory framework. The exact credential and accepted examination depend on where you plan to work.
The ICC KGH Kansas Standard Journeyman Electrician examination is one established path used by participating Kansas jurisdictions. The official International Code Council bulletin, updated in August 2026, lists 80 multiple-choice questions, a four-hour time limit and an open-book format.
Kansas law generally requires covered local standard electrical examinations to have a 75% passing standard. For an 80-question exam, that means a study target of 60 correct answers. Always confirm the exact exam and result requirement with your licensing jurisdiction.
The current KGH reference list identifies the 2017 National Electrical Code and Ugly's Electrical Reference, any edition. A newer 2023 or 2026 NEC can help with broader code education, but should not be substituted for the KGH-listed examination edition.
Candidates should also document the experience needed for their license. Kansas law requires issuing jurisdictions to verify at least two years of qualifying field experience for a Journeyman certificate. Under the stated statutory pathway, up to one year may come from qualifying trade school that meets the documented-hour requirement.
The Sedgwick County and Wichita program is a practical example. Its public certificate instructions accept KGH and certain other listed ICC exams, require at least a 75% score, and outline field experience or trade school alternatives. This does not mean every Kansas municipality uses identical procedures.
Exam prep is not business licensing. A journeyman certificate shows trade competency, but an electrical contractor business may need separate local registration, licensing, insurance and a qualifying professional. Do not treat an ICC passing result as permission to operate an independent electrical contracting company.
This guide covers all nine KGH subject categories, including wiring methods, branch circuits, conductor sizing, equipment, services, grounding and bonding, motors, generators and special occupancies. It also explains why codebook navigation is vital even when the exam is open book.
For exam-specific study materials, explore the Kansas KGH Highlighted and Tabbed Book Package, designed around the 2017 NEC and Ugly's reference. Contractor Exam Preps also offers Kansas KGH Live Virtual and Self-Study Training and the Kansas Journeyman 2023 NEC Study Guide Combo for supplemental study.
Before scheduling, verify the exam code, approved references, local experience rules, fees, continuing education and test-day policies. Your city or county has the final word on issuing your Journeyman credential.
Important Kansas Journeyman Electrician 2026 Licensing Update: Kansas currently relies on city and county licensing rather than one statewide individual license. The ICC KGH exam lists 80 questions, four hours, open-book testing, the 2017 NEC and Ugly's Electrical Reference. Kansas law calls for a 75% minimum on designated local standard examinations. A 2026 statewide-licensing proposal, HB 2588, did not become law, so do not follow proposed 2027 rules as if they were active. Confirm your local application, experience and license renewal requirements before booking.
A journeyman electrician is an electrical tradesperson who demonstrates practical skill and code knowledge in wiring, installation, equipment, protection and safe working methods. Kansas cities and counties may require a local trade certificate before the person works in a regulated jurisdiction.
Day-to-day work can include branch circuits, feeders, receptacles, panels, motors, disconnecting means, lighting, conduit and troubleshooting. Some jobs feel routine, but every installation still needs the right code rule. Electricity does not offer a second opinion when someone skips the details.
The journeyman credential is different from a Master Electrician qualification and from a business-level electrical contractor license. Kansas law recognizes local certificates, sets experience and continuing-education rules for applicable programs, and contains provisions for recognition of standard examination credentials.
Cities and counties may adopt their own electrical codes and inspection standards. The code used for local installations can differ from the edition printed in an ICC test bulletin. The best approach is to know both which test you are taking and which authority governs your actual work.

Official KGH: 80 questions, four hours, open book.
Code reference: 2017 NEC and Ugly's Electrical Reference.
Passing: 75% minimum under applicable Kansas local standard exam law.
Code edition warning: Later editions of the NEC are for supplemental learning unless the current bulletin changes.
The current ICC Kansas bulletin divides the KGH journeyman test into nine subjects. These percentages add up to 100% and should drive your review schedule.
Electrical theory, general load calculations, definitions, terms and reading plans. Practice recognizing related NEC articles and solving real electrical scenarios, not simply repeating answers from memory.
Services, fault current, service conductors, bonding, transformers and temporary service. Practice recognizing related NEC articles and solving real electrical scenarios, not simply repeating answers from memory.
Feeder loads, sizing and equipment grounding. Practice recognizing related NEC articles and solving real electrical scenarios, not simply repeating answers from memory.
Branch-circuit calculations, outlets, overcurrent protection, conductor selection and GFCI/AFCI. Practice recognizing related NEC articles and solving real electrical scenarios, not simply repeating answers from memory.
Raceways, cables, underground methods, boxes, enclosures, clearances and panels. Practice recognizing related NEC articles and solving real electrical scenarios, not simply repeating answers from memory.
Luminaires, appliances, switches, receptacles and utilization equipment. Practice recognizing related NEC articles and solving real electrical scenarios, not simply repeating answers from memory.
Disconnects, switches, controllers and related equipment. Practice recognizing related NEC articles and solving real electrical scenarios, not simply repeating answers from memory.
Motor circuits, generators, electrical calculations and protective equipment. Practice recognizing related NEC articles and solving real electrical scenarios, not simply repeating answers from memory.
Pools, RV parks, emergency systems, fire alarms and specialized equipment. Practice recognizing related NEC articles and solving real electrical scenarios, not simply repeating answers from memory.
Nine categories: 100% of the exam.
Largest share: Wiring Methods and Materials at 26%.
Next: Branch Circuits and Conductors at 19%.
Best study habit: Review large subjects often and leave time for the smaller sections.
Start with the ICC KGH examination outline and the actual 2017 NEC reference. A newer codebook might be easier to find in a store, but the KGH bulletin gives the specific exam edition. Use the right tool for the right test.
The nine-category outline offers a simple study map. Wiring Methods and Materials takes 26% of the exam. That is over one quarter of your time on paper, so spend serious practice hours on raceways, cables, underground installations, boxes and panelboard requirements.
Branch Circuits and Conductors accounts for 19%. Learn how conductor ampacity, overcurrent protection, required outlets, GFCI protection and AFCI rules fit together. Understand when a calculation or special rule changes the answer.
Services and Service Equipment accounts for 11%. Review electrical service arrangements, equipment, grounding and bonding, transformers, temporary service wiring and service calculations.
Equipment and Devices accounts for 13%. Study receptacles, switches, appliances, luminaires and other electrical equipment. Motors and generators, feeders, control devices and general electrical knowledge round out the blueprint.
Make electrical math a repeat activity, not a single long Saturday project. Solve service loads, branch-circuit calculations, conductor sizing, motor and transformer problems, and practice basic power formulas.
Open-book testing is not permission to spend four hours flipping pages. Practice looking up one provision at a time and then answer without second-guessing every detail. The goal is quick topic recognition, followed by a careful code check.
The Kansas KGH Highlighted and Tabbed 2017 NEC Package supports exam-edition navigation. The Kansas KGH Live Virtual and Self-Study Training adds guided review, while the Kansas 2023 Journeyman Guide and NEC Combo can be used for supplemental learning if you keep the different editions straight.
Codebook skills: Know the index, articles, tables, conditions and exceptions.
Electrical theory: Review Ohm's law, current, voltage, resistance and power.
High-weight practice: Focus on wiring methods and branch circuits.
Exam simulation: 80 questions in 240 minutes using only approved references.
This simplified diagram shows how service equipment, feeders, a panelboard, lighting, motors, transformers and grounding relate to one another. It is a study aid, not an approved construction plan.
The KGH often requires electricians to connect two ideas. A panelboard question may also involve protection, or a motor question may include controls and equipment grounding.
Simplified educational diagram. Follow current local code requirements and approved engineering plans for actual installations.
Ask the local authority which Journeyman Electrician credential is needed where you plan to work.
Collect reliable proof of at least two years of field experience or a permitted schooling alternative.
Verify that your jurisdiction accepts the ICC KGH or another approved examination and the required passing score.
Read the current ICC KGH outline, four-hour format and 2017 NEC and Ugly's reference list.
Use the listed references during preparation and arrange any index tabs or highlighting under ICC testing rules.
Prioritize wiring methods, branch circuits, equipment, services, grounding and calculations.
Complete the 80-question KGH test within 240 minutes and meet the applicable 75% passing score.
Submit the score report, work documentation, application and local fee, then follow renewal and continuing-education rules.
The ICC KGH outline provides percentages rather than fixed question counts for each category. These bars show the published shares of the 80-question test.
Largest subject: Wiring Methods and Materials, 26%.
Second largest: Branch Circuits and Conductors, 19%.
All nine domains: 100% of the official KGH examination outline.
Important: Percentages are blueprint weights, not guarantees of an exact item count on an individual test.
The Kansas KGH candidate bulletin names the 2017 NEC and Ugly's Electrical Reference, any edition. That is the study starting point for the exam. An attractive 2026 codebook does not automatically belong in your KGH exam bag.
| Book or Reference | Edition | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| 2017 National Electrical Code | 2017 | Official ICC KGH listed NEC. Primary code reference for exam-specific preparation. |
| Ugly's Electrical Reference | Any Edition | Additional ICC KGH listed reference for electrical formulas and facts. |

| Local Electrical Code | Depends on Jurisdiction | Applies to field installations and inspections; can differ from KGH exam reference. |
Approved KGH NEC: 2017.
Additional KGH listing: Ugly's Electrical Reference, any edition.
Newer book editions: Useful for learning updated rules, but they can produce different answers.
Local installations: Follow the adopted code and amendments in the city or county where you work.
The KGH has 80 questions and 240 minutes, an average of three minutes per item. That sounds generous until a long electrical calculation arrives. Open-book success means locating the correct provision efficiently and returning to the question.
Start by knowing the NEC's main structure. Learn where branch circuits, grounding and bonding, wiring methods, conductor ampacity, motors and special occupancies appear. Always check definitions, exceptions and table notes.
Kansas cities and counties may regulate electricians and electrical contracting businesses through local licensing, certification, permits and inspections. It is important to separate a person holding a Journeyman Electrician certificate from a company selling electrical contracting services.
A journeyman may possess technical competency to install and service electrical systems, but that is not the same as legal authority to bid, contract or operate a business independently. Local electrical contractor rules can address business registration, qualifying individuals, insurance and compliance with building codes.
Kansas law allows local governments to adopt and enforce electrical codes, standards and regulations. This means two locations may have different installation requirements even when they recognize the same ICC trade examination.
Sedgwick County and Wichita require trade certificates for covered electrical journeyman and master personnel. The published program lists accepted ICC exams and work-history standards. A candidate planning to work elsewhere should consult that jurisdiction directly.
A passing KGH score helps document competency. It does not eliminate electrical permitting, business licensing, inspection, workplace safety or other applicable duties.
Individual certificate: Evidence of journeyman-level trade competency.
Contractor business: Check local licensing, insurance, qualifying-person and registration requirements.
Permits and inspection: Controlled by the local authority having jurisdiction.
Applicable code: The locally adopted edition and amendments, which may be newer than the KGH 2017 NEC.
| Classification | Licensing Authority | Main Difference |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical Helper or Apprentice | Local Program / Employer | Develops supervised experience under applicable rules. |
| Residential Electrician | Local City or County | May have a narrower scope and a separate approved examination. |
| Journeyman Electrician | Local City or County | Trade certificate supported by qualifying experience and an accepted exam. |
| Master Electrician | Local City or County | Advanced credential; Kansas statute requires qualifying prior journeyman certification for designated standard licensing. |
| Electrical Contractor Business | Local Business Licensing Authority | Separate business or qualifying-party requirements may apply. |
| ICC KGH | ICC / Pearson VUE | 80 questions, 240 minutes, open book, 2017 NEC. |
| ICC 558 | ICC / Pearson VUE | An alternative exam accepted by Sedgwick County for journeyman certification. |
| ICC KGD | ICC / Pearson VUE | Kansas Standard Master Electrician examination, not Journeyman KGH. |
| Local Installation NEC | City or County | Edition depends on locally adopted electrical code. |
| ICC KGH Study NEC | ICC Bulletin | 2017 NEC, even when a local installation code is newer. |
This six-week program follows the nine KGH categories and gives the biggest subject areas plenty of practice. Adjust your schedule based on your strengths and the date of your exam.
The Kansas KGH can feel demanding because it combines electrical theory, practical installation knowledge, technical calculations and codebook navigation. Eighty questions across nine categories leave little room to ignore an entire topic.
The largest share is Wiring Methods and Materials at 26%. Branch Circuits and Conductors adds 19%. Together, those two categories account for 45% of the published content outline. A strong study schedule should reflect that fact.
That does not mean you can skip the remaining 55%. Services, equipment, motors, controls and special occupancies can all create unfamiliar situations. An electrician who spends most working days on residential wiring may need extra practice with industrial equipment or emergency systems.
The four-hour testing window allows an average of three minutes per question. Some answers take just a few seconds because you already understand the rule. A complicated calculation may take longer, so practice making deliberate decisions about when to move on.
Open-book reference access is helpful, but it can also become a trap. If you look up every familiar detail, you may run short of time. Use the codebook to confirm uncertainty and focus on understanding the electrical question first.
The 2017 NEC reference edition is another challenge. Candidates who recently used 2023 or 2026 codebooks in class may remember changes that are not reflected in KGH's listed source. Practice with the exact published exam code.
A useful place to start is the KGH Highlighted and Tabbed Reference Package or Kansas KGH Live Virtual and Self-Study Training. Those resources support study, but results still depend on preparation and meeting the local jurisdiction's licensing rules.
These Contractor Exam Preps listings relate directly to Kansas journeyman electrical study and the ICC KGH pathway. Pick the exam edition first, then choose materials that fit your learning style.
The KGH exam currently references the 2017 NEC and Ugly's Electrical Reference. Kansas-branded 2023 materials and general 2026 materials are useful for supplemental education, but a later NEC edition is not a direct replacement for the official 2017 reference.

Getting ready for the Kansas Journeyman Electrician examination begins with the local licensing office, not with the newest book on your shelf. Kansas currently allows cities and counties to administer electrician licensing. Your first job is to identify the jurisdiction where you plan to work and learn the exact credential it requires.
One commonly accepted examination is the ICC KGH Kansas Standard Journeyman Electrician. The International Code Council's August 2026 bulletin lists 80 multiple-choice questions and a four-hour testing limit. The test is open book, but open book does not mean every book is approved or that every answer will be easy.
Under Kansas law, the designated local standard licensing examinations carry a minimum passing score of 75 percent. For an 80-question practice exam, 60 correct answers is a useful passing benchmark. Because an individual jurisdiction still issues the actual credential, confirm its score-report and application requirements before scheduling.
The reference list deserves special attention. The KGH currently names the 2017 National Electrical Code and Ugly's Electrical Reference, any edition. This may seem surprising when many schools and retailers also discuss the 2023 and 2026 NEC editions. A newer codebook can be useful for learning current electrical requirements, but it should not be treated as a substitute for the exam's listed 2017 edition.
Study the official subject outline rather than only the parts of electrical work you perform most often. Wiring Methods and Materials makes up 26 percent of KGH. Branch Circuits and Conductors adds another 19 percent. Together, these are nearly half of the exam. Raceways, cables, boxes, conductor ampacity, overcurrent protection and branch-circuit questions deserve plenty of repeated practice.
Services and Service Equipment accounts for 11 percent. Equipment and Devices accounts for 13 percent. Additional subjects include feeders, general electrical knowledge, control devices, motors, generators and special occupancies. A complete study plan covers all nine areas, even the smaller ones.
Electrical calculations are part of successful preparation. Practice Ohm's law, power relationships, load calculations, feeder sizing, branch-circuit protection and motors. Write out your steps, check your units and learn which NEC provision applies. Clear thinking can save more time than guessing quickly.
A useful six-week plan starts with the exam bulletin and electrical theory. It then concentrates on wiring methods, branch circuits, services, equipment and motors. During the final week, complete several 80-question practice tests using a four-hour timer. Review every missed question and note where to find the controlling code provision.
Contractor Exam Preps provides Kansas-focused options, including a KGH Highlighted and Tabbed Book Package that uses the 2017 NEC and Ugly's Electrical Reference. The store also offers KGH live virtual and self-study training plus Kansas-branded 2023 NEC materials for supplemental learning. Compare package contents and the approved exam edition before placing an order.
Eligibility also matters. Kansas law generally requires at least two years of documented qualifying field experience for a Journeyman certificate, with a limited allowance for qualifying trade schooling. Sedgwick County and Wichita provide an example of how a local authority verifies experience and accepts certain ICC examinations.
Remember that an ICC passing result does not automatically produce a city or county certificate. You still need to submit the necessary work history, forms, results and fees. Likewise, a Journeyman Electrician certificate is not automatically a separate electrical contractor business license.
After receiving a certificate, follow the renewal rules and continuing-education requirements that apply to your jurisdiction. Kansas law sets a minimum continuing-education framework for covered local licensing programs, including code education. Keep those records organized before renewal time arrives.
Good exam preparation is more than memorizing a handful of answers. The real goal is knowing how electrical systems operate, finding the correct rule, making safe choices and working accurately. With the right licensing information, the right NEC edition and consistent practice, Kansas journeyman candidates can build a practical plan from first study session to final local approval.
