Preparing for the Texas Journeyman Electrician exam? This complete guide brings together current TDLR licensing requirements, the 2026 PSI two-part test format, an NEC study plan, and electrical preparation resources from Contractor Exam Preps. Whether you spend your day running conduit or working through service loads, you'll find a practical route from experience records to exam-day readiness.
The goal is to study the right subjects, use the right code edition, and know which license you are applying for. Electrical exams are serious business, but preparing for one does not have to feel like trying to find a short circuit in the dark.
Texas issues an individual Journeyman Electrician license through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, usually called TDLR. A licensed journeyman performs electrical work under the general supervision of a Master Electrician. Typical work involves installing and maintaining branch circuits, feeders, lighting, panel equipment, conductors, raceways and many other electrical systems. The license shows that a worker met the state's training and examination conditions. It does not, by itself, create an electrical contracting company license. That separate distinction is important for anyone who hopes to own a business someday.
TDLR manages statewide electrician licensing, experience review, examinations, license renewal and related rules. PSI provides the computer-based examination for approved applicants. Candidates must submit their application to TDLR and wait for eligibility approval before scheduling with PSI. When reading exam-prep websites, confirm that the information refers to Texas, to the Journeyman Electrician credential, and to the newest Candidate Information Bulletin. Details from Master Electrician or Residential Wireman exams do not automatically apply to this test.
The regular Texas Journeyman Electrician pathway requires 8,000 hours of qualifying on-the-job training under a Texas-licensed Master Electrician. Applicants with at least 7,000 verified hours may apply to take the examination early, but passing early does not erase the remaining experience needed for license issuance. Supervising Master Electricians must verify the relevant work on the required forms. Track employment dates and hours carefully, keep copies of records, and contact supervisors while their information is still easy to locate.
No. This guide uses the search-friendly phrase contractor exam prep, but the Texas Journeyman Electrician credential is an individual license. A business offering electrical contracting services must qualify for the separate Texas Electrical Contractor license, including the required Master Electrician of Record and insurance obligations. Journeyman electricians work under appropriate supervision and through authorized arrangements. Anyone planning to advertise electrical contracting services should review the specific business-license rules rather than assuming a journeyman examination score covers every requirement.
PSI is the exam administrator for the TDLR electrician program. Texas changed the Journeyman Electrician test to a separate NEC Knowledge portion and a separate Calculations portion in March 2025. Both are multiple choice. This split matters because an electrician can be comfortable finding a code rule but still need practice with electrical math. Study the two parts independently, keep separate error logs and do not assume extra time from one part transfers to the other.
The current PSI Journeyman Electrician NEC Knowledge portion has 59 items, including three unscored items, and allows 130 minutes. The minimum score is 70 percent on the scored portion. The outline covers definitions and theory, services, feeders, branch circuits, wiring methods, equipment, motors, disconnecting means, special occupancies and renewable energy. Branch circuits, wiring methods and equipment are particularly important because each has ten listed items. Do not ignore smaller areas simply because their totals look modest.
The Calculations portion has 26 items, including two unscored items, and allows 110 minutes. A separate score of at least 70 percent is required. You may encounter electrical theory, service loads, feeder loads, branch-circuit math, conductor sizing, grounding and bonding calculations, raceway and box calculations, equipment and motor calculations, and special installation questions. Practice writing down what each value means before plugging numbers into a formula. Mixing up amperes and watts is a fast way to turn a simple question into a long afternoon.
Each portion needs a passing score of 70 percent or better. Do not combine the two portions into one average and hope a high score on NEC Knowledge makes up for a weak calculation result. Your study plan should aim well above the minimum. Practice in timed sessions, review the reasoning behind each missed answer and track how many questions you can solve without guessing. The PSI bulletin states that you must pass both separate portions.
The updated PSI Texas Electrician Candidate Information Bulletin states that examinations are referenced to the 2026 National Electrical Code effective September 1, 2026. Older product descriptions or search results may still mention the 2023 NEC because that was the prior code cycle. The exam bulletin controls the correct edition for your appointment. Always confirm the current posted bulletin before buying materials or entering the exam room, especially if your application and test date fall near a code transition.
Yes, Texas electrician exams are open book, with specific limits on reference materials. Candidates bring their own compliant NEC volume. The bulletin permits a soft-bound NEC and rules for permitted publisher-produced permanent tabs, while restricting loose-leaf, ring-bound and spiral-bound versions. The NEC Handbook is not an approved substitute. Pre-existing highlighting, underlining and notes are permitted under the published policy, but writing or marking in the book during the examination is not. Read every current rule before test day.
Branch Circuits and Conductors is a ten-item category within the NEC Knowledge outline. It includes circuit protection, grounding and bonding conductors, conductor requirements and GFCI or AFCI topics. Learn how an installation condition changes the answer. A receptacle in one place may have different protection needs from another. Practice navigating the appropriate NEC articles and reading table headings, footnotes and exceptions carefully. Speed helps, but code questions reward accuracy first.
Electrical Wiring Methods and Electrical Materials is another ten-item NEC Knowledge category. It covers raceways, cable trays, boxes, enclosures, cabinets, panels, cords, cables and underground wiring. You should understand why the wiring method, location, physical protection and installation conditions matter. Build a reference map for common raceway and box questions, then practice looking up the correct code language without reading half the book every time.
Electricians need to understand service equipment, feeders and separately derived systems, including grounding and bonding concepts. The Knowledge portion lists six items for services and three for feeders. The calculation portion adds service and feeder math. Learn the difference between a service conductor, feeder and branch-circuit conductor, and know where grounding electrode rules and equipment grounding rules are discussed. Those similar-sounding terms are not interchangeable.
Yes. The Knowledge outline includes ten items for Electrical Equipment and Devices, five for Motors and Generators, and one for Electrical Control Devices and Disconnecting Means. Study receptacles, switches, luminaires, appliances, workspace clearance, heating and cooling equipment, motors, generators and disconnects. Motor calculations also appear on the separate math portion. Keep a short reference list of NEC articles used for motors and related equipment, and practice deciding what information is necessary.
Yes. Renewable Energy Technologies appear in both portions. The knowledge outline includes photovoltaics and electric vehicle chargers, while the calculations outline also includes a renewable energy item. Learn the code-navigation path for these systems and review the safety concerns of modern electrical installations. Electric vehicles and rooftop solar are no longer mysterious future technology. Their circuits and equipment are part of current trade work and licensing exam coverage.
Begin with license eligibility and the official PSI outline, then learn how the 2026 NEC is arranged. Next focus on the largest Knowledge categories, including branch circuits, wiring methods and equipment. Add a dedicated calculation practice block every week from the start. During the final two weeks, run mock sessions matching the separate 130-minute and 110-minute limits. Keep a notebook of missed question topics outside the exam room, revisit related articles and practice again. A steady plan beats last-minute codebook treasure hunting.
Contractor Exam Preps offers a 2026 Texas Journeyman Study Guide and NEC Combo with Tabs, a Calculations Study Guides and NEC Combo, a Super Combo with flash cards, a Texas Journeyman Ultimate Combo and a practice exam and flash card study package. These are different study packages, not official licensing credentials. Review each product listing for exact editions, components, availability, delivery and course access. Choose a package that fits the subjects you actually need to improve.
Verify that TDLR approved your application, confirm your PSI appointment and check that your identification matches the registration. Inspect your NEC volume and tabs against the current bulletin. Practice both test portions separately, and bring only what PSI permits. After passing, confirm TDLR has received the score and that you have completed the full experience requirement and all outstanding license steps. Passing the test is exciting; showing up to work with the correct active license is even better.
Yes. Texas scores the Calculations portion separately, which means strong code-lookup skills cannot cover a weak math result. Start with everyday electrical formulas, then move into service and feeder demand, branch-circuit loads, conductor sizing and equipment calculations. Practice with the NEC open and explain your steps in plain language. If you only memorize one answer, a slightly different question can leave you stuck. Learning the method lets you solve many variations with less stress.
Start by understanding how the code is organized. Chapter 1 contains general definitions and requirements. Chapter 2 covers wiring and protection, Chapter 3 covers wiring methods and materials, Chapter 4 covers equipment for general use, and Chapters 5 through 7 address additional installations and special conditions. Chapter 8 covers communication systems, while Chapter 9 supplies useful tables. Do not try to memorize every page. Learn where the important topics live, then practice applying the language correctly.
A useful practice session mixes questions from multiple published topic categories. Complete a group without interruptions, write down why you selected each answer, and check the rule or calculation afterward. Separate the Knowledge and Calculations practice clocks so you become comfortable with the actual exam structure. For each error, decide whether you misunderstood a definition, missed an exception, used the wrong table, made a calculation mistake, or simply ran out of time. That diagnosis is more useful than a score alone.
Start with what you already own and what you most need. Candidates who mainly need current code-navigation practice may prefer a Texas Journeyman study guide and tabbed 2026 NEC combo. Candidates who struggle with math may benefit from a calculation guide and more practice problems. A larger package may make sense if you want flash cards, study guides and online review together. Always read the exact product listing and compare the exam reference to the current PSI bulletin before purchasing.
Important Texas 2026 Electrician Exam Update: Texas Journeyman testing uses PSI and has two separately scored portions. NEC Knowledge: 59 items, 130 minutes. Calculations: 26 items, 110 minutes. Both require at least 70%. The PSI bulletin updated September 2026 states that examinations reference the 2026 National Electrical Code effective September 1, 2026. Earlier store descriptions may still refer to 2023 NEC. Confirm the latest PSI Candidate Information Bulletin and the correct TDLR instructions before your appointment.

NEC Knowledge: 10 published subject categories, 56 scored items.
Calculations: 10 published subject categories, 24 scored items.
Practice priority: Branch circuits, wiring methods and equipment each carry ten NEC Knowledge items.
Begin with your TDLR eligibility status and the most recent PSI Candidate Information Bulletin. Verify the 2026 NEC examination cycle, the two separately timed test portions, the approved reference rules and the correct exam name. That removes the guesswork before you begin.
Start each study day with a small group of code-lookup problems. Find definitions, locate relevant article headings, examine tables and practice the question conditions. Read around the answer so you understand why the rule applies.
Dedicate extra time to the three ten-item NEC Knowledge categories: Branch Circuits and Conductors, Wiring Methods and Materials, and Equipment and Devices. Together, these represent 30 of the 56 scored knowledge questions.
Practice calculations every week. Review electrical theory, connected loads, feeders, branch circuits, conductors, raceway fill, box fill, motors and equipment. Use a systematic method: list known values, identify the correct NEC rule or formula, calculate and check units.
Use practice exams that reflect the current two-portion structure. Run a 130-minute NEC Knowledge drill and a separate 110-minute calculation drill rather than one long mixed timer. PSI does not transfer unused minutes between test portions.
Keep a mistake log for missed topics. A question you miss twice tells you more about your weak spots than twenty easy problems you already know by heart. Practice the article lookup again until it becomes familiar.
For guided study materials, see the 2026 Texas Journeyman NEC Combo and the Texas Electrician Calculations and NEC Combo. The Texas Super Combo adds flash-card reinforcement for formulas and definitions.
Step 1: Confirm eligibility and the PSI bulletin.

Identify Journeyman Electrician as the requested credential. Do not confuse it with Master, Residential Wireman or Electrical Contractor business licensing.
Collect accurate experience verification from supervising Texas-licensed Master Electricians.
Mail the current application and fee; candidates with 7,000 qualifying hours may request early examination approval.
Follow TDLR and PSI instructions, then confirm your appointment and acceptable identification.
Verify allowed code reference, book binding, tabs, notes and both separately timed portions.
Prepare for the 59-item Knowledge and 26-item Calculations portions; both need 70% or better.
If you tested early, finish the experience requirement before license issuance and complete outstanding TDLR requests.
Confirm active license status, comply with supervision rules and renew annually.
The NEC Knowledge part contains 56 scored items and the Calculations part contains 24 scored items. The two charts below use the published scored outlines. Non-scored pilot items are additional questions and are not assigned to a single subject in this chart.
Largest Knowledge categories: Branch Circuits, Wiring Methods and Equipment have 10 scored items each.
Calculations emphasis: Service and branch-circuit calculations each have 4 scored items.
Two passing results: You must earn 70% on each portion, not on a blended total.

Important book rule: Confirm soft binding, publisher-made permanent tabs and permitted markings with PSI.
The NEC is a powerful reference, but an open-book exam is not an open-ended research assignment. PSI sets strict timers, and a good candidate knows where to look before searching.
Use your 2026 code book during daily practice. Learn the chapter structure, common articles, definitions, important tables and exception wording. Then improve your calculation method until you can complete familiar problems without backtracking.
A Texas Journeyman Electrician can perform electrical work under the general supervision of a licensed Master Electrician. Electrical installation and maintenance can involve service equipment, feeder and branch distribution, lighting, receptacles, conductors, motors, controls, and other permitted electrical systems. Actual tasks still must comply with adopted electrical codes, the employer’s authorized work, and applicable local rules.
The individual Journeyman license should never be presented as permission to operate an independent electrical contracting business. The company licensing pathway involves a separate Electrical Contractor license, a Master Electrician of Record and insurance requirements. If your career goal includes opening a company, plan those future steps independently of your Journeyman test.
Journeyman: Individual worker credential.
Supervision: General supervision by a licensed Master Electrician.
Electrical Contractor: Separate business license and Master Electrician of Record required.
Official scope: Texas Electrical Contractor licensing page.
The names sound similar, but Texas assigns different permissions and qualification rules to different licenses.

TDLR • PSI • 2026 NEC • Two Exam Portions
Best for: Best for applicants moving from supervised electrical training to a Journeyman license.
Advanced Individual Qualification
Best for: Best for licensed Journeyman electricians planning a future Master license.
Business License, Not an Exam Synonym
Best for: Best for electricians researching future company ownership and legally offering electrical contracting services.
The Journeyman exam is challenging because electricians must understand installation code rules and solve real electrical calculations. The NEC Knowledge part is 130 minutes for 59 items. The separate Calculations part allows 110 minutes for 26 items. Candidates need at least 70 percent on each, not merely a passing combined average.
The NEC Knowledge outline gives ten items each to branch circuits, wiring methods and equipment and devices. That makes these three areas worth particular attention. Calculations require different habits, including selecting a method, reading a table, checking conductor and circuit assumptions, and keeping track of units.
Your years of supervised work can be a strength, but daily field routines do not always expose you to every tested special occupancy, solar installation or generator question. Set aside time for unfamiliar topics. Know how to navigate the exam-approved 2026 NEC before the test.
Practice timing separately. If you spend every Knowledge question chasing a perfect citation, you may run out of minutes. If you hurry through a calculation without checking whether a circuit load is continuous, you may miss an avoidable point.
The right method is steady code practice, regular electrical math, mock tests and detailed missed-question review. Work on speed after you can solve the problems accurately. That approach is much more dependable than reading the entire NEC the night before and hoping for a miracle.

Preparing for the Texas Journeyman Electrician exam starts with knowing exactly which license you are pursuing. Journeyman Electrician is an individual Texas credential administered by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. It is not the same as the separate Electrical Contractor business license. A Journeyman performs electrical work under the general supervision of a licensed Master Electrician. Understanding that relationship is just as important as understanding the test itself, because your career plans must fit the license you actually hold.
TDLR generally requires 8,000 hours of qualifying supervised training before issuing a Journeyman license. Applicants who document at least 7,000 hours may request approval to take the exam early, but early testing does not cancel the final experience requirement. Make sure every supervising Master Electrician provides the proper verification. Keep records organized before beginning a focused study program, because paperwork can take time even when your electrical knowledge is strong.
The written examination is administered through PSI and has two separately scored portions. The NEC Knowledge portion contains 59 items, including three unscored items, with 130 minutes available. The Calculations portion contains 26 items, including two unscored items, with 110 minutes available. Each portion requires 70 percent or better. Candidates cannot use a high result on one portion to balance a failing result on the other, and unused testing time does not transfer between parts.
The updated September 2026 PSI bulletin states that Texas electrician examination questions reference the 2026 National Electrical Code effective September 1, 2026. That is why you should check official documentation instead of relying on older pages that mention the 2023 code. The exam is open book, but PSI has detailed rules for the reference you may bring. Use a compliant soft-bound NEC. Check the restrictions on tabs, loose paper, binding, the NEC Handbook and marking pages during the test.
The study outline gives a clear guide for dividing your time. Branch Circuits and Conductors, Wiring Methods and Materials, and Equipment and Devices each carry ten scored Knowledge items. Services, feeders, motors, special occupancies, controls, theory and renewable energy complete the broader subject list. Calculations test electrical theory, service and feeder loads, branch-circuit math, conductor decisions, motors, equipment and special installations. Learn both code navigation and the reasoning behind each calculation.
A practical six-week plan can turn those subjects into daily action. Start by reviewing the correct codebook, then cycle through large Knowledge categories while practicing electrical math every week. During the final weeks, complete a Knowledge simulation using the 130-minute limit and a separate Calculations simulation using the 110-minute limit. Review missed problems carefully. An error log helps you see which subjects need attention instead of simply repeating questions you can already answer.
Contractor Exam Preps lists a Texas Journeyman Electrician study guide and 2026 NEC combo, calculation-focused packages, flash cards and broader preparation bundles. Those products can help organize your studying, but they do not guarantee a passing score or license issuance. The official exam bulletin remains the authority for test rules, while TDLR controls license approval. Aim to reach exam day prepared, with accurate training documents, a compliant NEC and enough confidence to work through the questions one at a time.
The Texas Journeyman Electrician exam is for electricians working toward a state-issued individual license. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, or TDLR, handles the licensing process. You need to show that you have completed qualifying electrical training supervised by a licensed Texas Master Electrician. The usual experience requirement is 8,000 hours. If you already have at least 7,000 verified hours, you may be able to take the test early, but you must still meet the full training requirement before the license is issued.
Texas uses PSI to deliver the Journeyman Electrician exam. The test has two parts instead of one big combined score. The first part is called NEC Knowledge. It has 59 questions in total, including three that do not count toward your score. You get 130 minutes. The second part is called Calculations. It has 26 questions in total, including two unscored questions. You get 110 minutes for that part. You need at least 70 percent on both. A strong score on one part cannot make up for a low score on the other.
The newest PSI bulletin says Texas started using the 2026 National Electrical Code for electrician exams on September 1, 2026. That matters because some older sites still talk about the 2023 code. Always read the current bulletin for your actual appointment. Texas allows an open-book NEC reference under specific conditions. Your codebook must have the approved type of binding and tabs. The NEC Handbook and loose extra sheets are not allowed. Check the published rules before making changes to your study book.
For the NEC Knowledge portion, focus on how electrical systems are built and protected. Important subjects include service equipment, feeders, branch circuits, conductors, grounding, bonding, wiring methods, boxes, raceways, receptacles, lighting, appliances, motors and generators. You will also need to understand some special installations, photovoltaic systems and electric vehicle chargers. The biggest Knowledge categories include branch circuits, wiring methods and equipment. These are good places to spend extra study time.
For the Calculations portion, practice the formulas and code methods used to solve electrical problems. Study Ohm's law, electrical power, service loads, feeder loads, branch-circuit loads, conductor sizing, raceway fill, box fill and equipment calculations. Check your units and make sure you know when to use a table or a specific calculation method. Because the math is scored separately, do some math practice throughout the week instead of waiting until the last few days.
A six-week study schedule can make preparation easier. Spend the first week understanding TDLR eligibility, the exam rules and the layout of the NEC. In the next weeks, practice branch circuits, wiring methods, equipment, grounding, services, feeders, motors and special systems. Keep electrical calculations in your routine from the beginning. Near the end, run practice tests using the two real time limits. Every missed answer should send you back to a code section or a clear calculation.
Contractor Exam Preps sells Texas Journeyman study guides, 2026 NEC book bundles, calculation packages, flash cards and larger study combos. Review each package to see what fits your needs. Remember that buying materials does not automatically make you eligible to test. Apply through TDLR, wait for approval, schedule through PSI and complete the experience requirement. The goal is to pass both exam portions and then receive the correct individual license before working under its authority.
