Prepare for the Virginia Master Electrician PSI exam with a clear licensing roadmap, the current official blueprint, code-study strategies, and relevant Contractor Exam Preps books and courses. This long-form guide follows the original 26-section layout with the same tables, diagrams, topic charts and helpful study cards.

What Is a Virginia Master Electrician License?

Virginia's Master Electrician license is an individual tradesman credential issued through the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, or DPOR, under the Board for Contractors. A master electrician has the technical knowledge to plan and lay out electrical work, supervise complex electrical installations, and make decisions that meet applicable codes and rules. The credential signals advanced knowledge, but it does not automatically license a company to offer contracting services. A person and a business are two different entries on the state's licensing paperwork. There is no shortcut around that distinction, even if you have enough tools to fill an entire truck.

Who Administers the Master Electrician Exam?

The Virginia Board for Contractors reviews exam applications and approves candidates. PSI Services administers the written Master Electrician examination after state approval. Applicants should read the latest official PSI Candidate Information Bulletin for the precise exam appointment procedures, reference-material rules, fees and content outline. DPOR handles eligibility and licensing; PSI handles exam registration and delivery. Knowing which office to contact helps avoid a phone-call tour of the Commonwealth. Start at the state tradesmen program page, then follow the exam scheduling instructions in your approval notice.

How Many Questions Are on the Virginia Master Electrician Test?

The July 23, 2026 PSI bulletin lists 90 questions on the Master Electrician portion. The published blueprint distributes them across 24 subject categories that cover state regulations, electrical systems, NEC application, safety and more. Every topic matters, from the biggest code areas to the single-question subjects. An effective study plan starts with that precise outline. Rather than reviewing everything in an electrical handbook at random, you can schedule short sessions around the actual number of questions assigned to each area.

How Long Is the Exam?

Candidates have 270 minutes, which is four hours and thirty minutes, for the 90-item Master Electrician portion. That works out to an average of three minutes per question. Some questions are quick checks of a definition. Others demand finding a code rule, reading a table or completing a calculation. Train with short timed quizzes and full-length practice exams. If one conductor problem turns into a ten-minute mystery, mark it for review and keep moving. Your goal is to answer the whole exam, not win a staring contest with one table.

What Is the Passing Score?

The 2026 PSI outline gives a passing mark of 63 correct answers out of 90, or 70 percent. It is sensible to aim higher than the minimum in practice. A practice score near 70 percent leaves little room for an unfamiliar rule, a rushed calculation or a question with tricky wording. Track accuracy by category, not only by the final practice-test score. Two candidates can earn the same total while having very different weaknesses. Knowing your weak areas makes tomorrow's study session useful instead of just longer.

Is the Virginia Master Electrician Exam Open Book?

Yes. The official PSI bulletin identifies Virginia tradesman exams as open book, subject to strict limits. Candidates must bring their own approved references, since the exam center does not supply books. Study guides and loose pages are not allowed in the exam room. References may be highlighted, underlined and indexed before the appointment; permitted tabs must be permanent, and handwritten notes are not allowed. Do not write in the book during the examination. Read the current bulletin before preparing your reference materials, because testing centers enforce those rules.

Which NEC Edition Does the Exam Use?

The July 2026 PSI bulletin identifies the 2020 National Electrical Code, NFPA 70, as the electrician code reference used to prepare exam questions. PSI states that candidates may use other editions of references, but code questions are based on the edition named in the bulletin. This difference is critical because newer code cycles can change article language, tables or exceptions. If you buy a 2026 NEC-based study package, use it for broader learning while checking official exam answers against the specified 2020 NEC. Never assume the newest retail book sets the state test.

Does the Exam Cover Electrical Safety?

Yes. The current Master blueprint includes a separate Safety category with four questions, and the listed electrician references include NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, 2024 edition. Study electrical shock and arc-flash hazards, qualified-worker procedures, lockout and verification of an electrically safe work condition. Practice identifying the correct safety response before touching a theoretical circuit. On the job and on the exam, electricity does not care how confident you feel.

What Experience Is Needed Before Testing?

Virginia's current regulations provide more than one route to master examination eligibility. For the electrical trade, a candidate may qualify after holding a valid Journeyman Electrician license for at least one year or through a route based on nine years of practical experience in the trade. The nine-year option is not a free pass on documentation; the applicant must show qualifying experience. Older websites may still describe a ten-year route, so refer to current 18VAC50-30-39 requirements instead of an archived summary.

Is the Master Electrician License a Contractor License?

No. Virginia licenses individual tradesmen and contractor businesses through related but separate systems. A Master Electrician license demonstrates advanced individual trade competence. An electrical contracting business seeking to bid, contract or advertise for regulated electrical work must meet the applicable contractor license requirements, which depend on its class and specialty. The company may need a designated qualified individual, and different business examinations may apply. Do not confuse passing the Master Electrician PSI exam with completing a Class A, B or C contractor license application.

Which Subjects Carry the Most Questions?

The latest published outline assigns eight questions each to Service and Feeder Requirements, Grounding and Bonding, and Motors and Controls. Seven questions each go to Services, Feeders, and Branch Circuits; Conductors and Cables; and Raceways and Boxes. These technical areas deserve plenty of repeat practice. Still, the exam includes Virginia regulations, safety, electrical fundamentals, lighting and low-voltage systems. A solid study schedule gives the high-count domains more time without allowing small topics to disappear.

What Should I Know About Services and Feeders?

Study service conductors, disconnecting means, service equipment, feeder overcurrent protection, load calculations, conductor ampacity, grounded conductors and separately derived system rules where applicable. The exam may ask for an installation requirement, a calculation or the appropriate rule governing a described system. Organize your code navigation around the type of equipment, not merely the word service. For example, a question about service sizing may require a different starting point from a question about bonding the service enclosure.

Why Are Grounding and Bonding Important?

Grounding and bonding can be confusing because both involve electrical connections, but they serve different functions under the NEC. Review grounding electrodes, equipment grounding conductors, bonding jumpers, continuity of fault-current paths and connections for services and separately derived systems. Practice describing which conductor or connection carries normal current and which provides a protective fault path. Drawing a simple service diagram often makes the rules easier to remember than repeating a list of article numbers.

What Does the Motors and Controls Section Test?

Motor questions can combine electrical knowledge, code tables, overload protection, short-circuit protection, branch circuit sizing and disconnect rules. Read carefully to determine whether the question concerns motor current, conductor size, a controller or an overcurrent protective device. Those details are not interchangeable. Use repeated motor calculation exercises with different horsepower, voltage and load conditions. Check the relevant NEC table and notes before trusting a number remembered from a previous job.

Do I Need to Practice Electrical Calculations?

Definitely. The Master exam includes electrical-electronic fundamentals and technical categories that can require calculations. Review Ohm's law, power, single-phase and three-phase relationships, voltage drop, conductor sizing, load calculations, motor currents and raceway or box fill. Write the required result first, then the known values and units. A tidy calculation is easier to check for mistakes. If the answer looks wildly different from a normal electrical installation, revisit the units before circling it.

Are Raceway and Box Rules Tested?

Yes. Raceways and Boxes account for seven questions in the published Master outline. Study conduit types, installation methods, supports, fittings, raceway fill, boxes, pull and junction boxes, and protection of conductors at transitions. Practice following a question from the installation description to the proper NEC article or table. Think about how a seemingly small physical detail, such as the number of conductors or the direction of a pull, affects the legal answer.

Does the Exam Include Special Occupancies and Equipment?

Virginia's Master outline includes Special Occupancies, Special Equipment, electrical signs and outline lighting. These questions can test when special NEC rules apply in addition to general wiring requirements. Study selected hazardous locations, health-care-related installations, emergency systems, specialized equipment and sign disconnects at a high level before drilling the areas named in the bulletin. Learn how to recognize a special location. Once you spot the category, finding the applicable article becomes far less intimidating.

What About Lighting, Fire Alarms and Communication Systems?

The exam contains specific smaller domains for Lighting, General Low Voltage Requirements, Communication Systems and Fire Detection and Alarm Systems. These may be fewer questions individually, but together they can affect whether you pass. Review basic wiring requirements, circuit arrangement, associated controls, grounding concerns and device installation where applicable. Also know that low-voltage wiring is not exempt from every electrical rule simply because the voltage is lower.

Are Virginia Licensing Rules on the Exam?

Yes. The first sections of the PSI blueprint address Standards of Practice, Standards of Conduct, Renewal and Reinstatement, Definitions, Qualification for Licensure and Revocation. This means the Master examination is not only a test of NEC knowledge. Review the Virginia Board for Contractors' Individual License and Certification Regulations. Pay attention to who may perform regulated work, what professional conduct is expected and how licensing must be maintained. The paperwork deserves a spot in your study binder, too.

How Do I Use Contractor Exam Preps Study Products?

Contractor Exam Preps offers Virginia Master Electrician study guides, a calculations guide, flash cards, a 2026 NEC codebook combo and an online course. Choose products based on the skills you need to strengthen. A printed guide is helpful for organized reading, flash cards work for quick recall, and simulated tests help with the clock. Remember that a store's 2026 NEC materials are not the same as the NEC edition identified by PSI for code-based examination questions. Use official references to confirm test-specific answers.

Should I Buy a Combo Package or a Single Study Guide?

That depends on your preparation style. The Virginia Master guide and NEC combo is suited to structured code study, while the calculations combo adds focused electrical math work. The Super Combo adds flash cards, and the Ultimate Combo includes online practice. A course may be useful for candidates who want guidance and practice exams without a classroom schedule. Before buying, compare product descriptions, editions, current availability and the actual contents. A larger stack is not automatically a smarter stack.

How Can I Study in Six Weeks?

Begin with the official bulletin and eligibility documents. Then move through regulations, fundamentals, services, grounding, motors and wiring methods. Reserve regular sessions for calculations and NEC navigation, and give the smaller categories a brief but meaningful review. In the final week, attempt a full 90-question practice exam in 270 minutes and correct every missed answer. A steady plan that fits your workday is more reliable than trying to absorb 500 pages after midnight.

What Should I Bring to the PSI Testing Center?

Follow your registration instructions for valid identification, arrival time, permitted calculator rules and approved reference materials. Check the PSI bulletin's requirements for permanent tabs, highlights, underlining and the prohibition on handwritten content. Do not arrive with a removable binder of notes or unapproved study guides. Confirm your name matches your ID, allow extra travel time and know which personal items must be stored. Exam day is not the ideal moment to discover that the rules are different from your practice sessions.

What Happens After You Pass?

A passing PSI result is an important step, but the state licensing process also depends on eligibility documents and DPOR approval. Follow the instructions for issuing or updating your individual tradesman license and stay familiar with renewal and continuing education rules. If your next goal is to operate an electrical contracting business, research the separate contractor business classification and qualified-individual requirements before bidding on work. The right license needs to match the work you plan to perform.

Important Virginia Master Electrician 2026 Update: The July 23, 2026 PSI Candidate Information Bulletin lists 90 questions, 270 minutes, and a passing score of 63. It specifies the 2020 NEC as the code basis for electrician examination questions and also names NFPA 70E, 2024 as a reference. The current Virginia regulations permit the Master examination pathway after one year as a licensed Journeyman Electrician or nine years of qualifying practical experience. The individual Master license is separate from an Electrical Contractor business license. Store products based on the 2026 NEC are supplemental study materials, not a change to PSI's code-question basis.

What Is a Virginia Master Electrician?

A Virginia Master Electrician is an experienced electrical tradesman who has met the Board for Contractors requirements for an advanced individual credential. The Master level involves planning and laying out electrical installations, supervising and overseeing trade work, applying the electrical code and following Virginia professional rules. Qualified electricians bring real-world experience to questions about services, feeders, equipment, safety, conductors, raceways and electrical calculations.

DPOR licensing of the individual must be distinguished from the license needed for an electrical contracting company. A person may hold a Master Electrician license while a separate firm is responsible for business licensure, qualifying personnel, contracts and permits.

How to Prepare for the Virginia Master Open-Book Examination

Virginia Master candidates may bring approved published references to the PSI test, but the exam is not a permission slip for every note and study guide you own. The reference policy describes allowed highlighting, underlining, indexing and permanent tabs. Learn the rules early and rehearse with a compliant book setup.

Train yourself to identify the subject, locate the controlling article, read exceptions and apply the rule before choosing an answer. With 90 questions in 270 minutes, code-navigation speed matters alongside accuracy.

Do These Things

  • Confirm Board approval before scheduling at PSI.
  • Read the latest 90-question Master outline.
  • Study code questions using the PSI-listed 2020 NEC.
  • Review NFPA 70E 2024 for electrical safety.
  • Know the Virginia individual-license rules.
  • Use permanent reference tabs only if allowed.
  • Highlight and underline references before test day.
  • Practice services, feeders and grounding regularly.
  • Review motor branch-circuit and overload problems.
  • Take 270-minute Master practice examinations.
  • Check calculator and photo-ID policies in the bulletin.
  • Keep proof of education, licensing and experience.

Avoid These Mistakes

  • Assume a 2026 NEC study package changes the PSI exam code basis.
  • Bring loose pages, printed cheat sheets or study guides.
  • Use removable tabs or write notes in books during the exam.
  • Ignore regulations or the four-question Safety area.
  • Assume one year of employment equals one year licensed as a journeyman.
  • Confuse a Master Electrician license with a contractor business license.
  • Take Journeyman practice questions as the entire Master blueprint.
  • Guess a conductor ampacity without checking conditions.
  • Use a motor overload rule when a short-circuit rule is required.
  • Spend excessive time on a single calculation.
  • Forget that a newer code book can have changed provisions.
  • Wait until the night before to read PSI candidate instructions.

What Work Can a Virginia Master Electrician Perform?

A Virginia Master Electrician is an advanced individual tradesman qualified to plan, lay out and supervise work within the electrical trade, subject to Virginia law and applicable licensing limits. Electrical work includes installing, repairing, maintaining, modifying and removing wiring, conduits, systems, equipment and associated components regulated by the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.

A Master Electrician may serve in a qualifying supervisory role for a properly licensed company when the relevant rules are satisfied. But individual trade licensure does not by itself authorize a business to advertise or contract for regulated electrical projects. A company must satisfy the applicable Virginia contractor license class, electrical specialty, qualified-individual and business requirements.

Individual: Virginia Master Electrician tradesman license.

Company: Separate contractor business license for regulated contracting, as applicable.

Technical scope: Electrical work subject to current Virginia codes, permitting and inspections.

Professional duty: Follow safety practices, state standards and local authority requirements.

Virginia Master Electrician Versus Other Electrical Licenses

Virginia regulates individuals and businesses separately. The Master exam and a company contractor-business application have different purposes, even when the same licensed electrician helps the business meet its qualification requirements.

Classification or Exam Purpose Important Difference
Apprentice or Trainee Learning electrical trade work under applicable supervision Not equivalent to a licensed Master Electrician.
Journeyman Electrician Qualified individual electrical tradesman One year holding the license can satisfy a Master examination eligibility route.
Master Electrician Advanced individual qualification 90-item PSI exam and advanced responsibilities.
Electrical Contractor Business Company licensed to contract for electrical work Separate application, company license classification and designated personnel.
Class C Contractor Business Business contractor class under Virginia project thresholds Business licensure, not the individual Master exam.
Class B Contractor Business Business contractor class under Virginia project thresholds Distinct business eligibility and examination rules.
Class A Contractor Business Larger licensed contractor business class May require further qualification and business examinations.
Virginia Electrical Specialty Contractor classification/specialty related to electrical work Separate from individual Master tradesman classification.
Master Electrician PSI Examination Individual professional trade examination 90 items, 270 minutes, 63 correct to pass.
Journeyman Electrician PSI Examination Lower individual trade examination Different 70-question outline and time limit.
NFPA 70 (2020) PSI electrician code basis for questions Not the same as the 2026 NEC edition in store packages.
NFPA 70E (2024) Safety reference listed in PSI bulletin Safety remains a separate test domain.

How Hard Is the Virginia Master Electrician Exam?

The Virginia Master examination asks a candidate to think beyond the next connection or repair. It measures advanced code knowledge, technical calculations and the responsibility to perform electrical work safely within state rules. Some candidates are comfortable with motor controllers but less familiar with licensing language. Others know their code sections yet struggle with time pressure. Both weaknesses are fixable through targeted practice.

The current PSI outline lists 90 questions and allows 270 minutes, but several categories involve searching tables, assessing conditions or applying more than one rule. The largest domains include service and feeder requirements, grounding and bonding, and motors and controls. Repeated practice on those topics builds both speed and confidence.

The exam also includes professional standards, renewal responsibilities, electrical-electronic fundamentals and a dedicated safety section. Ignoring smaller categories can leave easy points on the table. The most reliable plan is to divide study time by question weight while revisiting every category.

Pay attention to the NEC edition named in the bulletin. Contractor Exam Preps offers newer 2026 NEC-based books for long-term learning, but PSI states that electrician code questions are based on its specified 2020 NEC edition. When the books differ, do not guess which edition will control the question.

A Master license must be earned through Virginia eligibility and state application procedures as well as the examination. Before booking, verify whether you qualify based on one year holding a Journeyman license or nine years of practical experience. A complete application is as important as a strong test score.

Virginia Master Electrician Exam-Day Checklist

Make two small checklists: one for books and identification, another for the subjects you plan to review before the exam. No electrician enjoys arriving with the wrong reference and a perfect sharpened pencil they are not allowed to use.

Do These Things

  • Confirm PSI Master Electrician appointment, not Journeyman.
  • Have your current government-issued photo ID.
  • Confirm your name matches your PSI registration.
  • Review all reference rules on the latest bulletin.
  • Bring compliant 2020 NEC reference if you choose it.
  • Check NFPA 70E 2024 and regulatory reference rules.
  • Use permanent tabs and pre-existing permitted markings.
  • Do not bring handwritten notes into reference materials.
  • Know 90 questions, 270 minutes and 63 to pass.
  • Practice safety and professional regulations.
  • Check permitted calculators and personal-items policy.
  • Plan transportation, check-in and document storage.

Avoid These Mistakes

  • Carry printed study guides or loose reference pages.
  • Use removable tabs or handwritten marginal notes.
  • Assume the 2026 retail NEC sets the PSI code-question basis.
  • Ignore the Safety category in the Master outline.
  • Bring unapproved flash cards into the test center.
  • Study only the Journeyman version of the exam.
  • Confuse a Master license with business authority.
  • Forget the required DPOR testing approval.
  • Rely on an outdated test bulletin.
  • Spend too long on a single service calculation.
  • Assume you can write on a reference during testing.
  • Forget to check the PSI exam-day rules.

Ready for Virginia Master Electrician Contractor Exam Prep?

Prepare for your Master exam with the current PSI outline, Virginia regulations and reliable electrical study materials. Build a plan that covers licensing, NEC navigation, math, safety, and the test-day rules.

Conclusion: How to Prepare for Your Virginia Master Electrician License

Preparing for the Virginia Master Electrician examination begins with understanding what the credential actually means. This is an advanced individual tradesman license administered through the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation and its Board for Contractors. The Master credential recognizes the knowledge needed to plan, lay out and supervise electrical work while following the applicable code and professional rules. It does not automatically authorize someone to operate an electrical contracting business. That business activity has its own licensing requirements. Clear goals at the beginning prevent expensive confusion at the end.

The current PSI Master Electrician examination includes 90 questions and allows 270 minutes. Candidates must answer at least 63 questions correctly to pass. Those numbers should shape how you practice. Instead of taking only five-question quizzes with no time limit, build toward a full 90-question rehearsal. The four-and-a-half-hour clock may appear generous, but calculations and code lookups can consume surprising amounts of time. Learn to identify a question's subject quickly, locate the relevant rule, check exceptions and move along when one problem becomes stubborn.

The current published blueprint separates the Master exam into 24 subjects. It assigns eight questions each to Service and Feeder Requirements, Grounding and Bonding, and Motors and Controls. Other important areas include services, feeders and branch circuits, conductors and cables, and raceways and boxes. Work through all of them. Each category can make the difference between a passing result and a retake. Use the topic-weighting chart to spend more time where question counts are higher, then protect a few study sessions for smaller categories.

Do not ignore the regulations. Standards of practice, conduct, license renewal, definitions, eligibility and discipline are part of the examination. This is logical because a Master Electrician's responsibilities extend beyond technical work. Planning installations and supervising others requires professional judgment, accurate records and compliance with state requirements. Read the Virginia Board for Contractors' Individual License and Certification Regulations. That preparation serves you long after the exam because you will need to maintain and renew the credential correctly.

Reference-book preparation requires a deliberate plan. The July 2026 PSI bulletin identifies the 2020 NEC as the code basis for electrical questions and also lists the 2024 NFPA 70E safety standard. PSI permits qualifying open-book references but imposes restrictions on notes, loose materials, book marking and tabs. Permanent tabs and highlighting done before the exam can help if they meet the current rules. Study guides and handwritten content do not belong in the testing room. Check the exact bulletin again before your appointment.

Contractor Exam Preps offers Virginia Master study guides, calculation books, flash cards, practice exams and online instruction. Its newer retail packages are based on the 2026 NEC. Those products may be useful for broad knowledge and updated code study, but the code edition included in a package must not be confused with PSI's specified edition for exam questions. Review product contents and choose resources that address your own needs. A candidate weak on motors may benefit from repeated math practice; another may need a structured review of regulations.

The last week should be about accuracy, rest and organization rather than panic. Complete a realistic timed exam, mark the topics you miss and study the controlling reference for each mistake. Confirm your approved PSI registration, photo identification, examination location, allowed books and calculator restrictions. Keep a copy of your experience records and licensing communication. Arriving prepared means you can focus on the questions rather than worrying about a missing document or the wrong reference edition.

Finally, remember that passing the examination is one part of a larger professional path. Complete all remaining DPOR requirements and confirm that your individual Master Electrician license has been issued. If you plan to bid electrical projects or run a company, investigate Virginia's separate contractor business licensing rules before offering services. Your strongest advantage is an organized combination of field experience, careful code knowledge, electrical safety and steady practice. That combination helps with test day and with the work that follows it.

Key Takeaways

  • Know the real exam: 90 questions, 270 minutes, and 63 correct answers to pass.
  • Use the current reference policy: The official PSI bulletin bases electrician code questions on the 2020 NEC and lists NFPA 70E 2024.
  • Study all 24 subjects: Give extra practice to services, feeders, grounding, bonding, motors, conductors and raceways.
  • Confirm your Master eligibility: Review the one-year licensed Journeyman route or the nine-year practical experience route with DPOR.
  • Keep individual and business licensing separate: Master status does not automatically authorize an electrical contracting company.

Plain-Language Summary: Virginia Master Electrician Exam Prep

Virginia's Master Electrician license is for individuals who can handle advanced electrical responsibilities. These include planning installations, supervising work, applying electrical codes and meeting professional standards. The credential comes through Virginia's Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, under the Board for Contractors. It is not the same as a company contractor license. If your goal is to open an electrical contracting business, you may need a separate contractor license and a qualified individual connected to that business.

Before scheduling the Master exam, check your eligibility. Current Virginia rules allow a path based on one year holding a valid Journeyman Electrician license in the trade. There is also a path based on nine years of documented practical electrical experience. The details of each application matter, so keep licenses, dates, supervisors and other experience records together. The Board reviews applications for testing. PSI administers the examination only after that approval is given.

The July 2026 PSI Master examination bulletin lists 90 questions. The time limit is 270 minutes, which is four hours and thirty minutes. To pass, a candidate needs at least 63 correct answers, equal to 70 percent. The exam has 24 subject areas. Some questions ask about professional rules and definitions; others ask about code requirements or how an electrical system should be installed. Practice with the full time limit so exam-day pacing feels familiar.

Several important categories have eight questions each. These are Service and Feeder Requirements, Grounding and Bonding, and Motors and Controls. Other major categories involve branch circuits, conductors, cables, raceways and boxes. Electrical theory, low-voltage systems, lighting, fire alarms, safety and special equipment also appear. You do not need to give every subject the same study time, but do not ignore an area just because it has only one or two questions.

The examination is open book with restrictions. The current PSI bulletin identifies the 2020 National Electrical Code as the basis for electrician code questions and also lists NFPA 70E 2024. Virginia professional regulations are another important reference. PSI explains that candidates may bring qualifying published references, but loose papers, study guides, handwritten notes and removable tabs are not allowed. Check the actual candidate bulletin before arranging and marking your books. The same rules should guide your practice setup.

Contractor Exam Preps sells Virginia Master Electrician preparation products, including study guides, electrical calculations books, flash cards, 2026 NEC study packages and online practice. Its products can help build general electrical knowledge and faster lookup skills. Keep in mind that the 2026 NEC used by these newer retail packages is not automatically the code edition on which PSI bases exam questions. Always verify code differences using the listed PSI reference when preparing for a particular test date.

A simple six-week plan can make the work manageable. Use week one for eligibility, regulations and reference organization. Spend the next three weeks on services, feeders, grounding, conductors, raceways, motors and electrical theory. Use week five for special equipment, lighting, low-voltage systems and safety. In week six, complete full timed practice tests and study the subjects you miss most often. Short, consistent study sessions are usually more useful than one exhausting weekend.

Before exam day, confirm your PSI appointment, photo ID, approved references, book-tab rules and calculator policy. After passing, follow Virginia's remaining license issuance and renewal procedures. If your professional plan includes contracting with customers, check the separate business licensing process. The main idea is simple: know the exam format, practice the highest-value topics, use the correct official references, and arrive with an organized plan. You do not have to memorize every page, but you do need to know how to find and apply the rules.
